There Are No Vampires In This Book

Synopsis

TARYN HAD NEVER BEEN NORMAL. She wasn't like other girls- not after that night, that thing, took her parents from her. She made it through hospitals, doctors, and therapy by playing by their rules and saying all the things they wanted to hear. But, inside, she held on to the truth. She knew what she saw.
SHE SPENT HER TEEN YEARS PREPARING IN SECRET With her two closest friends at her side, she dedicated herself to a mission. She would train and she would hunt. When the time came, she would be ready. No one she loved would be hurt by one of those monsters ever again
But with high school behind them, new found freedom comes with new responsibilities and new problems. Instead of weapons and self defense classes, she now has jobs and bills. The relationship with her best friend was suddenly shifting into new, scary territories. How could she take down bad guys if she couldn’t get her own life in order?
AND THEN THERE WAS HIM. A mysterious stranger who pops up in suspicious places and throws off all sorts of bad vibes. His face now starred in her regular nightmares and plagued her thoughts in the day. Was she overreacting? Or, was this finally the monster she had been waiting for? As the scars of Taryn’s past rise up to haunt her, she begins to question herself. With her mission faltering and her friendship off kilter, would life ever be the same again? Would she ever be the same?

Excerpt

Taryn made sure to keep a normal distance away from her target, so they could avoid detection. That might spook him or bring about a confrontation. And wouldn't that be awkward? She needed... she didn't know what just yet. Just more information, she supposed. Something to calm her nagging gut feeling.

"So... is this how you pick up guys?" Kenzie was just behind Taryn as she eyeballed the creepy guy from the graveyard. "Stalk them for a bit? Because I think I need to give you some pointers."

Taryn's face screwed up in a twist of pure What-the-hell.

"I don't want to pick him up. I want to make sure he's not a bloodsucking monster!" she whispered in an overly loud manner. Beside them, Aiden frowned.

"Uh-huh. So the first really hot guy you stumble upon just happens to be a possible vampire?" Kenzie's cheeks almost split in two; her grin was so wide. Taryn slapped her arm hard.

 "Ow!"

"Shh!" Taryn hushed her with waving arms and a disapproving face. "He's going to hear us!"

"How is that guy hot? He looks homeless." Aiden's frown seemed to be glued on. "Or like a drug dealer. That guy is not hot."

"Are you the resident authority on male hotness?" Taryn poked him in the side. When he didn't smile, she poked him again and again until he swatted at her finger.

"So you do think he's hot?" he accused. Kenzie popped her head in between them and eyeballed the back of their victim as he walked away.

"Yeah. He's hot…" She sighed. Catching the stern look from Aiden, she quickly tacked on, "…if you like that whole brooding, dark and serious bad-boy thing. But I mean, who does? Not this girl." She waved her hand dismissively. "Nope. Not you either, Taryn. Yeesh, why would I even suggest that? She's too smart and sensible for that schtick."

"Smooth, Kenz. Real smooth." Taryn laughed. In the corner of her eye, she caught the muscles in Aiden's jaw stand out as he ground his teeth. She turned her head and really looked at him. He was genuinely irritated.

"You okay, Aid?" She reached out and put a hand on his arm. He gave her a brief nod and looked away. So not like him. What the hell was going on with everyone lately?

They watched the guy enter a bar, and hesitated. From the outside, it looked like a crappy hole in the wall. Kenzie crinkled her nose and took a step back.

"Okay, now can we go home?" she asked. "There are a lot of bikes outside that place."

"Now who's being prejudiced?" Taryn sniffed at her.

The pink-and-blue neon sign blinked on and off, The Lucky Lady, casting the sidewalk into hues. In the window, another neon light blinked OPEN in red and blue. It was hard to see clearly through to the crowd inside, but Taryn could tell there were quite a few bodies moving around in there. It looked cramped and crowded.

"Let's go in," she said as she started forward. Aiden grabbed her wrist and gently tugged back. She looked down at his hand and looked up, one eyebrow asking her silent question.

"How about we go home and mark out on a map the places we've seen him? It's easier to stay incognito if we keep our distance," he offered.

It was a good, solid suggestion, but her curiosity was nipping at her heels. She wanted to know what this guy was doing, and she wanted to know what kind of trouble was inside those doors. Call her crazy — okay, really crazy — but she was up for an adventure tonight.

Summer Sunsets

The last few days the weather has been FANTASTIC. The girls and I have taken full advantage of the loveliness with daily walks. ... I may have brought my camera.
We popped a couple bowls of popcorn and camped out in the back yard to watch the meteor shower on Saturday. Then we wandered about the cornfields some more on Sunday, in search of awesome sunsets and adventures.

MINI SESSIONS

I am in the mood for MINI SESSIONS!

What are they? They are compact, fun sessions. Instead of 1-2 hours, they are only 20 minutes long with 5 to 10 finished images.
These are perfect way to capture the kids before school starts up again, to make a memory of the last summer before they start school, or to get some fun new lifestyle portraits of yourself!

If enough people are interested, we can set up a weekend in the park for sessions. Or, until the end of August, schedule a private mini session at your home for a more personal touch.

Details:

Time: 20 minutes for 1-4 people.
(Book a double session for more children/family members or if you want a little extra time)
Cost: $50 ($25 to save your spot and $25 the day of the session)
Included: 16 wallets (2 sheets- 1 pose each sheet, your choice) and 5-10 watermarked images ready for Facebook

All products (prints, metals, canvas, jewelry, albums etc) will be available to purchase as well.

Note: These sessions are *not* suited for outfit changes, multiple backgrounds, or a lot of poses. Try a full session for more of those options :)

Also... WE GOT TO PET GIRAFFES!

Just a quick cell phone shot for now. I'll have all sorts of photos to share when we get home.

Enjoy your weekend!

Cuddly Baby Goodness

On Sunday my goofy sister (love you!) and I got to spend the afternoon with this giggling ball of adorable.

Just check out those dimples!

Despite the crazy heat wave, we had a blast. He. Was. Perfect.

His dad did okay, too. :)

Just a Moment

Often, the moments worth remembering aren't full of proper poses and perfect smiles. Memories, the good ones, are raw, honest, and free.

My girls were dancing in the fading sunlight today. The moment was brief, silly, and utterly wonderful.

Cherish your moments.

Sharing a little something

A whole lot of busy, busy has been going on this month. The Girls Night boudoir party is this weekend! The hair stylist and make up artist are both ready to go. The hotel suite is fabulous. The wine... Oh, yes! The wine is waiting, all delicious in the bottles. Let's just say I'm pretty excited.

But still, the girls and I took a few moments from our busy day for another random photo shoot.

Little Devi is always up for posing. In fact, I'm not allowed to direct her at all. She tells me when to take the photo and then has to see the back of the camera to approve. Here are a couple of the shots she found worthy.

Happy New Year!

We got rid of the old year and welcomed in the shiny, happy, new one. During all the mess and craziness, I haven't picked another theme. Or much of anything else.

So this week's theme (and, okay, part of last week's, too, since I dropped the ball on the food shots) is diptychs and triptychs. Woooot!

Day 16 (Up there^) was the result of taking two hyper monsters on a walk on what looks like that last nice day of the season... and the last day of 2011.

Day 17 on the other hand, is pure nonsense. We did diva portraits. My oldest took right to it. *eye rolling goes here*
Credit also goes to her for snapping the shot of me. She loves to be behind the camera almost as much as she loves being in front.

And Day 18, in celebration of the first snow of the year. Of course, we all got cold and ran inside after about 8 minutes.

New year, new start, new projects- I'm looking forward to it. Hope you have a happy new year as well.

Sleep Overs, Cookies, and What's For Dinner

Today's adventure: A sleep over with three crazy little girls. It all started out pretty innocently...

And soon fell into silliness.

We had a dance party, played spa with my charcoal and clay face mask, and baked a tooooon of cookies. And they are still awake.... Help.

Day 14 of my food theme was our spaghetti. Pre-cooked. Because that was just much cooler (and less messy) to light.Link
And day 15 is our crazy oat cookies! Precooked also, but oh so yummy. (Recipe! OAT COOKIES!)

I need to go do a work out to make up for all these cookies. :)

A is for Apple

Day 13- This marks the second day of my week o' food photography. I can't believe I just spent 15 minutes seriously contemplating this apple. Every angle of this not-even-that-red apple. Okay, so how my lights can make this apple look.

Regardless, I stared at an apple for way too long today.

Another thing I stared too long at was lighting videos. Oh Youtube, you evil temptress. You glue me to the computer and steal all the time out of my evening. Now it's bed time and I've accomplished little. Buuuuut, the whole mess has me itching to play around with more lighting scenarios... on something other than fruit.

I've been thinking about doing some flirty, boudoir styled mini sessions for Valentine's Day. Maybe. A little book of photos or some mounted prints in a nice box would make a pretty memorable gift. Earlier this evening I had a few minutes to play around with some light set ups.

Ladies, any thoughts?

Catching Up After the Holidays

Another quickie post :) With all of the Christmas craziness, I haven't had a chance to update. Sooooo here are the last couple of days of photo silliness.

Wrapping up my mug shots-
I don't know about you, but that frog looks way too guilty and smug.

This weeks theme is........FOOD! I snapped an over dramatic shot of my green smoothies. I made a big batch, poured a couple of mason jars full, and then froze the rest in muffin pans. Super quick and healthy breakfast!

And one little photo of my angels on Christmas morning.
